Introducing Managed App Configurations

Last updated May 2, 2022

SimpleMDM now includes support for managed app configurations. This feature allows a SimpleMDM administrator to specify the configuration file provided when an app is pushed to a device. This is useful for apps that support this functionality.

Examples of apps that support managed app configurations are Box, Concur, and Kiosk Pro. Kiosk Pro, for instance, allows an administrator to specify the homepage, idle time, and whether the status bar is present all from the SimpleMDM web interface. An incomplete list of apps that support managed app configurations is available at

As configurations often must vary between devices, we’ve included variable support. Instead of specifying a fixed value in the configuration that will be shared with all of your devices, you may instead specify a variable that will be replaced with a device-specific value when the app is deployed.

Some of the currently supported variables are:

  • IMEI
  • MEID
  • Model
  • Phone number
  • Serial number
  • UDID
  • WiFi MAC address

To access managed app configurations, visit the “Managed Configuration” tab under App details.

This functionality is great, but it would be even better if we could set the Managed Configuration that is pushed *per device group*. If we have one app that we want to manage differently based on device group, we can’t currently do that.

I’d like to second Rob’s comment, and expand to suggest that a more granular approach is taken, at the device level itself

Hi Vlandimir! macOS does not currently support managed app configs.

Some macOS apps, however, can be configured with configuration profiles. These configuration profiles can be delivered to the device using the “custom configuration profile” feature of SimpleMDM. Support for configuration profiles varies from app to app and you will need to contact the app developer (or refer to their documentation) to determine if an app supports this kind of configuration or not.

As an example, Google Chrome supports configuration. I was able to find a link to more information, here.
